Protogoniomorpha temora
Protogoniomorpha temora, the Blue Mother-of-Pearl or Eastern Blue Beauty, is a butterfly in the Nymphalidae family. The scales on the wings shone different colours depending on the way the light hit the wings.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a tropical forest comprising montane forests and lowland forests. The habitat consists of dense forests and riverine thicket.
Took me quite some time to find this butterfly with it's wings open, as I usually only saw it flying. Very happy I found it!
That is a beauty, Pam. How fun!! Looking forward to more of your spottings from Uganda.
Pam, Protogoniomorpha temora has the eye on the hindwing, if this is the one you're referring to. The 4 species which comprise the genus Protogoniomorpha, i.e. cytora, parhassus, anacardii and temora were formerly included in Salamis.
Daniele, I looked at Eastern Blue Beauty before but it didn't seem to have the eye. I think Salamis temora looks closer, or are they both the same? It's a bit confusing...
Thanks daniele, and yes, I am LOVING Uganda. it's a butterfly lover's paradise amongst other things. And the people are SO nice...
