Variable Checkerspot

Euphydryas chalcedona

Description:

So many variations in one species! I think this is the Variable but am not 100% sure. It does have a lot of black. I love the red lines on the body of the butterfly but could not find these on the photos in my butterfly book. Also love the glowing antennae.

Habitat:

Wildflower meadows on Blackwall Peak, Manning Park, Cascade Mountain Range, BC. At an elevation of about 1800 m.

Notes:

There is a lot of confusion among lepidopterists about the checkerspots like this one. Similar species is Edith's Checkerspot
