Red Shouldered Hawk

Buteo lineatus

Description:

This hawk is brown, reddish brown and white. It has a barred underparts, and a banded tail. They have reddish shoulders, a long tail that is black with white bands, and long legs.

Habitat:

Woodlands near swamps and rivers and open areas.

Notes:

Fun Facts: 1. Red Shouldered hawks return to the same nesting area yearly. A hawk in California returned yearly for 16 years. 2. The oldest Red Shouldered hawk on record was 25 years old. 3. Thank you Brian! I was lucky to get the shots. I was sitting in my car shooting through the window. I did not want to get out of the car because I did not want to startle or disturb the pair, but I'm pretty sure they noticed me anyway. Good luck to you in spotting one or a pair in Washington!

Great spotting, series, and notes Dawn. I've been hoping to find the red-shouldered hawk here in Washington State but haven't found one yet.
