Tiger swallowtail(Western)

Papilio rutulus

Description:

Large swallowtail of the western US

Notes:

I rarely catch these landing in my yard, despite a tantalizing butterfly garden. Generally they fly over the house halfway up the trees. Was very excited to see one land at a wayside one afternoon
