The ruddy turnstone is a small, stocky wading bird. The plumage on the head is a mixture of black & brown; the bill is also dark. On the back & upper surface of the wings, rufous feathers are added to the back & brown. The breast has a thick black stripe across it. The belly & underparts are white. The feet & legs are orange.
