Dendrobates reticulatus
Small 3/4 inch frog. Red/orange dorsal with black stripes. Legs black with blue reticulated pattern.
Often found in pools of water collecting in bromeliads. Native to the Amazon region of Peru.
The bright colors serve as a warning to would-be predators. Their poison comes from insects in their diet.
Hi Greg. Beautiful Spotting. Would you please add this to our mission? We are creating something of a virtual field guide for our study sites in the Peruvian Amazon near Iquitos. http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8910...
Any other photos you have from your visit to the area that you can add would be much appreciated!
Thank You! ~Christa Dillabaugh, Education Director, Amazon Rainforest Workshops.
fantastic picture! the clarity that shows the texture of the frog is stunning. great work!
I'm going to have to stick by Dendrobates reticulatus. Note the "reticulated" blue/black pattern on the hind section of the frog. This differs significantly from the grainier pattern on P. vittatus.
It looks more like a Phyllobates vittatus http://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Phyllo... here is a dendrobates reticulatus http://www.poisondartfrog.co.uk/reticula...
