Description:

Firespike is an evergreen shrub in warmer climates, with sparse, stiff branches that grow mostly straight up to about 6 ft (1.8 m) tall. It has shiny dark green leaves with wavy margins and long pointed tips. From late summer through winter firespike produces abundant 9-12 in (23-30.5 cm) upright panicles of brilliant red tubular flowers.

Habitat:

Lyon Arboretum, Hawaii. Lyon Arboretum was established in 1918 by the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association to demonstrate the value of watershed restoration, test tree species for reforestation and collect plants of economic value. In 1953, it became part or the University of Hawai'i. Today, Lyon Arboretum continues to develop its extensive tropical plant collection emphasizing native Hawaiian species, tropical Palms, Aroids, Ti, Taro, Heliconia and Ginger.

Hawaii Native Status: Introduced. This naturalized ornamental garden plant is native to Mexico.
