Eastern Pygmy Blue

Brephidium pseudofea

Description:

Second smallest butterfly in the world and second smallest in North America, smaller only to Western Pygmy Blue. Brown below with narrow white stripes with four bold marginal spots on the hindwing. Above mostly brown. The wingspan is about 3/4" to 7/8" or 2 to 2.2 cm in length.

Habitat:

Found in South Eastern US. Near saltwater in coastal marshes and tidal flats. Spotted at Big Bend Wildlife Management Area in Taylor County, Florida. Found four of them nectaring on Bidens, low to the ground. Spotted less than 3 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.

Notes:

Spotted with the North American Butterfly Association Butterfly Count. This one was super exciting because it was a lifer for me.
