Peacock Butterfly

Aglais io

Description:

Peacock butterflies are one of the signs of spring, emerging in late March/early April from a winter hibernation. They are very easy to identify by the red wings with a brown border, and the two pairs of beautiful eye spots they posses (only one pair is visible in this spotting, the second pair is on the hind wings, but hidden). The underside is blackish brown, good for camouflage. They are widespread in the UK, and expanding their range.

Habitat:

Woodland clearings

Notes:

I was so thrilled when I found this butterfly! The first one I've seen this year. It was sunning itself on the warm dirt just outside a small wooded area. Spotted on the University of Essex campus grounds.
