Coal Tit

Periparus ater

Description:

Small tit, grey-white below, and grey above, with black-and-white patterned head. Difficult to identify 100% in flight, because of its resemblance to other species of tits present in european alpine environment (in particular Marsh and Willow tit, the two small tits of similar appearance; and the Great tit to some extent)- the key for the ID is the white line on the nape (going from the top of the back to the crown), splitting the black of the neck into two lateral black stripes (well visible on click N°3).

Habitat:

Alpine environment, on edges of coniferous forest and around mountain habitations and gardens, in urban periphery in Caucasus; in the same spot with Long-tailed tits and several species of finches.
