Twig Looper - late instar

Ectropis excursaria

Description:

This 40 mm long caterpillar was grey with wrinkly skin. It was about 5mm thick and when disturbed, lifted the head-end of body off the plant it was feeding on and stood out in the air at an angle, looking very much like a twig. The head end looked like a broken-off branchlet with the bunched-up true legs and a flattened head. The caterpillar had a two pairs of pro-legs. A pair of tubercles were seen on the dorsal side of the last body segments and about half way up the body, one of the segments showed a pair of dark patches on either side of the mid-line ( Pic 3).

Habitat:

Spotted feeding on Leptospermum rotundifolium.
