Oncopera rufobrunnea
This moth was about 25 mm long. Wings were tented-up, brown with a pink tinge and dark brown patterns. The termen appeared scalloped with dark specks. The costa also had dark patches and appeared separated from the rest of the wing by a thin ridge. The head, thorax and legs were covered with dense brown silky setae.
Spotted under bright lights after a warm day.
To my untrained eye this moth appears to have features of a Hepialid, Limacodid and Lymantrid moths ! My thanks to Peter Marriott for the ID. He says "The Vic. Oncopera can be confusing but this one is usually reddish-brown". Family: Hepialidae The larvae are subterranean and feed on roots and bases of grasses.
