Little Forest Bat

Vespadelus vulturnus

Description:

Short of being a microbat expert, it is difficult to ascertain exactly which species of microbat this little guy is. He is tiny, smaller than a mouse, and I would estimate body length to be about 5 cms. It is found only in south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania. It is a tiny bat often weighing less than 4 g (0.14 oz) (males in some areas weigh as little as 2.5 g (0.088 oz), and is sometimes referred to as Australia's smallest mammal.

Habitat:

Living behind a wooden wall of a rustic bush cabin. For some reason this little fellow was out in the open, but soon climbed back through an opening in the wall once I started paying some attention.

Notes:

These were the best shots I could get; the light was very poor. I have tried my best to identify the exact species through numerous photographs, although this species of microbat is often confused with other members of the Vespadelus sp.
