Snowberry Clearwing Moth

Hemaris diffinis

Description:

The moth's abdomen has yellow and black segments much like those of the bumblebee, whom it might be mistaken for due to its color and flight pattern similarities.

Habitat:

There are several of these moths in the garden. I often find their caterpillars on the native Coral honeysuckle. There are continual nectar sources in the garden. Today they are feeding on the new blooms of the Monarda. Soon they will be feeding on the Clammyweed that is just beginning to bloom.

Notes:

It flies during the daylight much like the other hummingbird moths, but it may also continue flight into the evening, particularly if it has found a good source of nectar.
