Spotted Tussock Moth

Lophocampa maculata

Description:

Spotted Tussock is a large Moth. Adult moths can have a wingspan of up to 4.5 cm.The adult moth has yellow-brown front wings with lighter yellowish spots, and pale yellow hind wings. This Moth appears light Beige,muted or pale Yellow with shades of Brown marble and spots.

Habitat:

Spotted Tussock Moth's can be found in the southern boreal forest and riparian habitats in the prairies Of Canada. Found on a variety of trees and shrubs feeding mainly on nectar from flowers of a great variety of woody and herbaceous plants. Secondary foods include sugary secretions honeydew from insects, juices of decaying fruit, tree sap, and manure liquids. Spotted Tussock Moth species have a widespread range. This Moth can be found throughout most of North America. Lophocampa species occur in America north of Mexico. Adult moths fly in forested and brushy areas. This Moth can be attracted to lights,Urban lighting.

Notes:

This large Spotted Tussock Moth was resting on our window where it was drawn, when attracted to our indoor light during the night. Our window is close to the forest. By mid-day it took to flight.
