Spotted towhee (male)

Pipilo maculatus

Description:

Males have a black head that extends down the neck to the top of the breast. The belly is white and has rufous sides. White spots on the wings and red eyes. Females are similar but are grey instead of black. The spotted towhee has a wingspan of 11.0 in (28 cm).

Habitat:

Spotted in my backyard. Plenty of underbrush with a mix of large trees.

Notes:

These are ground foragers eating mostly insects in spring and summer and eating mostly seeds in fall and winter.
