Huntsman Spider

Isopeda sp.

Description:

Large (up to 15cm leg spread)

Habitat:

Night hunting predator. Very fast and active although not normally aggressive towards humans even when handled. Found under bark and rocks and among out-houses

Notes:

These were common on my quarter acre block while there was a habitat consisting of several overgrown blocks. When the blocks were fenced in and the lawns kept mown these and other large spiders disappeared, According to "Revision of the Genus Isopeda Koch (Heteropodidae : Araneae) in Australia" I. vasta is not known in the area. David Hirst now identifies Isopeda vasta and I. montana groups of species and this appears to be one such
