Cactus Longhorn Beetle

Moneilema annulatum

Description:

Robust, black, elytra (wing covers) with wrinkled appearance. Antennae banded with black and pale gray.

Habitat:

Open fields and plains with Opuntia cacti.

Notes:

This beetle feeds on cacti as both an adult and a larva (larvae bore at the base of the plant). The beetles are flightless and mimic pinacate beetles (Tenebrionidae: Eleodes).
