Melanerpes carolinus
A male, Red-bellied Woodpecker taking off from the ground where it landed to grabbed up or check out some whole kernel corn I'd put out for some area deer I've been following.
In prairie grasses with light to moderate woodlands nearby, outside of a small town in north-western Minnesota
I live on a lake not too far away from here where we have Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers (year-round) and on rare occasion (early spring and fall) Red-headed Woodpeckers as well as Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers (from May through September) and Northern Flickers (year-round). The past two winters I've observed Robins eating peanuts, Blue Jays eating beef suet, Woodpeckers and mammals eating oranges and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers dipping bugs into grape jelly to feed their young (early summer). This winter I've noticed various birds coming to the whole kernel corn I put out for deer: Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, White-breasted Nuthatches and Black-capped Chickadees to name a few. I know they have Black-oil Sunflower, Safflower and Niger Thistle available as well as beef suet so I'm not sure what this new attraction is for area birds but I've noticed it at our cabin as well as in this location.

venusflytrap2000-Thank you! <3
terrific capture, janelle!
Elsa-Thank you so much! I wish I'd gotten it when I was more comfortable using my new (refurbished) camera and its built-in editing software though... :-)
Wow Janelle, what an incredible shot!
Thank you so much, Stian Waaler!!
Fantastic capture Janelle!

MarkW3-Thank you! :-)))
Donna-Thank you! I wish my editing skills were as good as my shutter finger. "-)
superb!
Awesome! Good job.
What a great shot! It's so rare to see the red belly.
Flirting with Fog? If you think so, I can. I wouldn't want to upset anyone though as it really isn't "flying"...As I mentioned I do have actually flying Trumpeter Swan images I could find and upload tomorrow. They may actually appreciate those more..? My grandson has hit his patience level today though so I really should get off the internet and take him somewhere "fun" today. "-)
The one where the swan is stretching it's wings we all been talking about.
Jellis-Will do not sure about or which swan images you're referring to though as none show them flying. I do have some Trumpeter Swan images in flight that might serve better but I haven't uploaded them here...yet. "-) Thank you!
Sorry it was Global Flight I forgot what it was called. You should do the Swan in there too even though it wasn't flying.
Jellis-Thank you! I found Global Flight but not Birds in Flight. Can you tell me if that's the one or in what category I can find the one you mentioned?
You should add this to Birds in Flight mission. But it you'll have to remove one since I believe it only allows 5. I would remove citters of the midwest.
Joshua Asel-Thank you so much! I'd only had my new (refurbished) Nikon D5100 for less than a month so was still trying to figure out the in-camera editing software. I'm not familiar with Photoshop and have an older (very slow) PC so I edit everything in-camera. I think this image could be better but, I did the best I could with it with what I knew and had at the time. :-)))
Absolutely beautiful.
patty-Thank you so much!! I'd put out whole kernel corn for my deer friends but was earlier than normal so had a bit of a wait. Eventually word spread and I had Blue Jays, White-breasted Nuthatches, Black-capped Chickadees and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers coming in for treats. A pound of corn later, this is what I ended up with. '-)
RubyPrakash-Thank you! :-)))
Beautiful bird and picture Janelle =)
