Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Sphyrapicus varius

Description:

What I believe to be two, juvenile, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers

Habitat:

Coming to our feeder trees for grape jelly and oranges after being led to them by their parents. Front yard feeder trees are located near a lake and within seven miles of wetlands, woodlands, farmlands, prairie fields and farm fields.

Notes:

We've had Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers coming to our grape jelly or jam for many years now. They're one of the first birds we see in our yard during spring migration and stay all summer, leaving again in late August or early September. This was a particularly good year for Sapsuckers as we had three or four young coming to our feeder trees, where in the past and since its been one or two young and their parents.
