Heermann's gull

Description:

This is the only one I saw that day on the spit. Easily recognized by the red bill with a black tip. While in breeding plumage it has an all-white head (non-breeding it has a dusky gray head). The body is gray and the wings are dark gray.

Habitat:

Spotted at the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge about halfway out on the long spit --- also known as Dungeness Spit.
