Crested Francolin

Dendroperdix sephaena

Description:

Crested Francolin are smallish pheasants that resemble quail a great deal. With bright pink legs, spotted breasts, and cryptic coloring on the upper side, they blend well with the sparse vegetation they like to hang around in. There high-pitched chipping call is one of my best memories of South Africa, and before that, Kenya.

Habitat:

I watched these francolin around a waterhole surrounded by low thornbush veldt and frequented by warthogs and kudus.
