This bird is frequently observed using a small chip of bark held in its beak as a tool to dig for insects. They also very much enjoy getting seeds from feeders.

Thank you for the nice comment, LandmarkExpert. White-breasted nuthatches are very nice, too; I like these brown-headed ones as they are so small and quick.

wow nice spotting, maria! i haven't even SEEN a brown-headed nuthatch. we get white-breasted occasionally, but that's the only species, and i don't have a nuthatch spot yet because they are SO elusive and skittery :)
