Pepper maggot fruit fly

Zonosemata electa

Description:

These fruit flies spend the winter 5-10 cm below the soil surface as pupae and then flies emerge from late June through August. After mating, females insert eggs just beneath the skin of young peppers on which larvae feed for about 18 days. Each larva cuts an exit hole and then drops to the soil to pupate. Only one generation occurs each year.

Habitat:

My yard

Notes:

This appears to be the first PNoah spotting of this insect, which I find cool as it was just in my backyard. Also see: http://ipm.ncsu.edu/ag295/html/pepper_ma...

Thank you, Cindy. It was cool finding this and then realizing it was the first spotting on Noah.

Nice series, Maria! Congrats on the first of this species and even genus on PN!
