This small fly was Breathtaking! It looked to be made of solid gold. It was about 8 mm long and wanted the salt on our skin. Family Tachinidae.
Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.
Speaking of Golden Flies.....in Ancient Egypt a Golden Fly was one of the highest honors that a Pharaoh could bestow on his subjects and was especially used for rewarding valor in military personnel. The last picture shows 3 of these golden flies from the Museum of Anthropology in Cairo. They are quite obviously Horseflies of the Family Tabanidae. These are from the era of Ramses II. I think if they had ever seen this Golden Tachinid they would have changed their style! http://historywithatwist.blogspot.mx/201... http://www.arabworldbooks.com/egyptomani...
