Mallards frequently interbreed with their closest relatives in the genus Anas, such as the American Black Duck, and also with species more distantly related, for example the Northern Pintail, leading to various hybrids that may be fully fertile.

Thanks, Liam. I thought it looked kind of mallard-like but just couldn't figure it out. I will add it to that group you mention. What do you suggest I put as the ID?

It's a hybrid, part Mallard, part something else. I've never seen such a patterning on the flanks, though, and am unsure of the second parent.

Alternatively, it could be an intersex (part male, part female), but I don't see anything indicative of that.
