Dimpled Specklebelly

Lobaria anthraspis

Description:

Here is a new lichen for PN. Lobaria anthraspis is a foliose lichen whose thallus is brown to yellowish olive on the upper surface. Lower surface is whittish grey with yellowish brown on the margins. The apothecium are reddish brown disc 1.5-3 (-4) mm diam., scattered.

Habitat:

Spotted on the ground on a trail at Hoh Ox Campground next to the Hoh river. There were wind storms two days before I arrived - so this lichen had been blown out of a tree. The trees there were mostly spruce, cedars and alders. Generally found in moist coniferous forest along the coast of western North America.
