Calypte anna
Hummingbird, most likely Anna's, as they are the most common in our area. We witnessed the courtship dance (male dive-bombing from 100+ feet) about eight days ago. Now there are two small eggs. Will try to get a photo of the nesting female, too. Two weeks later and now there are two baby birds in the nest. Very exciting for the resident humans!
Avocado tree, nest built about 6' off the ground, in our backyard. Several flowering plants in our yard including salvias, lantana and calendula. Dense urban setting with a few yards but mostly apartments and condos within a block or two.

That is very interesting! When they are hatched ,you should document it with photos and a video.
Phil, Your description of the courtship confirms these as Anna's hummingbirds. I'm so glad you're on PN and Welcome!
