The tree is driving me a bit crazy. I will have to get more photographs of it. It could be cottonwood, aspen, poplar, or who knows what else.

This is a Multi-colored Asian ladybeetle larva. They eat many, many aphids. Great find!

Thank you, Forest Dragon! I have quite a few images of the adult praying mantises I found in my garden last summer. Perhaps we can be a bit more certain of this little guy's ID once I identify the adults.

It does look a bit like some of the images for thistles that I came across. I suppose I will wait to see if it blooms.
