Spine-waisted Ant

Aphaenogaster lamellidens

Description:

Deep red ant with spikes on its abdomen carrying the fruit of Myrsine cubana (https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/28...). I only saw a couple of these ants on the tree. The fruit was substantial in comparison to the size of the ant, so it really impressed me with its feats of strength

Habitat:

On a palm tree on the Chassahowitzka Salt Marsh Trails about 5 minutes walk from the salt marsh/river. This area had a lot of palm trees and coastal plants with some woody trees interspersed
