Sympetrum sanguineum

Description:

European species of dragonfly from the family Libellulidae.Wingspan about 6 cm, male - pictured here - is bright red with black markings under the abdomen. Deep red eyes and brown-red thorax. The abdomen is bright red, narrows in middle and bulges again toward the tip. It also shows a broken black stripes on segments 8 and 9 (this feature was not captured on photo). Also a feature to help diagnostic : it has all black legs. Saffron-color patches at the base of wings, and red pterostigma.

Habitat:

Stagnant water, marshy protected area, seen in marge numbers in September - October.
