Ocyptamus fuscipennis
I was fortunate to get a clear picture of this quick moving syrphid fly as it was determined to visit the limited number of flowers in this small garden. Characteristics: Wings are spread (not laid back) dark/smokey with clear spots near the tips; red and dark banded abdomen is narrow at the base and downward curved.
Garden next to pool at resort in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Like other members of the subfamily Syrphinae, the larva of this species develops on a diet of aphids and scale insects. Adults pollinate and likely mimic Ichneumon wasps.
