Beech Gall Midge

Mikiola fagi

Description:

These are galls on leaves of beech (Fagus sylvatica) tree, caused by larvae of a fly belonging to Cecidomyiidae family - a small dusky-white larvae lives inside, but I did not get a good pic of it. Galls are about 1 cm tall, cream-white in the beginning of their development (pic N° 4) and reddish later on, with pointed ends. In some mountain zones they can considered an important pest for young trees in forests.

Habitat:

Found on beech tree leaves, edges of a mixed forest (oak, beech, spruce and fir) on slopes of Jura range, sloping down to Geneva lake valley. Found on one or two trees.
