Golden Grey Mullet

Chelon aurata

Description:

Locally known as 'Cipal' or 'Cipol', the Golden Grey Mullet appears as a very elegant fish, with seemingly hydrodynamic elongated body, sporting strong tail-fin. It has dark gray back that fades into silver white toward the belly with several grey horizontal stripes; stripes appear reflecting gold-yellow sparks. Often seen in mixed shoals, together with Salemas, another common resident of Croatian littoral.

Habitat:

This is a very common fish in Adriatic waters, occurring all along Croatian littoral. We observed it almost every day, in loose groups staying very close to shores. Here, on a popular beaches in a village of Dubrovnik riviera (Cavtat). The depth in this zone is between 0,5m up to 3m, and then descending sharply down to 10m. The sea bottom here is rocky, creating many crevasses and tunnels, and rocks are abundantly covered in algae. In those deeper waters, there are some large colonies of sea grass.

Notes:

I'm aware that the opening and closing pics appear weird - but I believe this was only partly caused by bizarre settings on my phone camera (which died in the process, in spite of being waterproof...). The environmental (surroundings, water and weather) conditions that day and light were also strange, transforming all environment into some green-grey screen.
